It is disgusting but not shocking that all these racist things are being said about her.. The most idiotic I've seen so far are "Nice slap in the face to the people of 911" and "Egypt dancing? This is America" .........
1. She's Indian.. Not African nor Middle Eastern, if we really want to care about race and labels.
2. It is so sad that 'white' people think they are from here. "Go back to your own country terrorist" um.. You go back to yours, terrorist of the Natives (and the rest of the world really)
3. Racism is very much alive, even if race is just a fabricated meaningless label only based on artificial visuals with no substance. No bone, organ, not even skin of your body says 'you are black, and he is white, and she is asian' . 'RACE' was created to categorize us.
I did a painting about all this for my Have Goals project, and it will be shared with all of you soon.
This was us.

The highlight of New York was creating art out of state for the first time, and being around a new culture and new responses to my art.. If you've never heard of Afro Punk Fest I will inform you now. Festival based in Brooklyn; artists, musicians, just all types of creative creatures in NYC get together for a weekend and celebrate and party Afro culture and Punk. Some photos Karl took from the festival here. I was grateful for the opportunity to be an artist at their After dark party in Brooklyn. Met so many people, and it was the night of the Vma's which was also in Brooklyn, we didn't get back to Harlem till 6 am. Because I ran out of film, and my other roll got exposed all I have from this night are phone pics.

Kamelaha,
Those who shoot film, and actually, shoot film.. have most likely experienced the GREAT pain of accidently opening up the camera when the film is still not all the way rolled back into the canister..... I unfortunately experienced this in LaGaurdia Airport. And that was my only roll in the Canon AE-1. So now the only photos I have are the few in the disposable film cam I bought in New York.
Enjoy :) :(

Hello all,
I type this as I gaze out the window in westside Harlem.. currently residing in Washington Heights.
Lost in a complex beauty of New York City's culture and buzz. I've enjoyed myself tremendously on this trip, but because Nyc and I fell in love, we aren't sad. We will inevitably be ~together soon~. This was my first time creating art in another state, with another culture and people I am greatly unfamiliar with. In Milwaukee, it's the same organizations, festivals, ideas that are rarely executed.. This was a breath of fresh air. I met sooo many people, I met my pen pals, artists who want to collaborate, the workers and sponsors behind Afro Punk Fest, and so much more. Although every person I met who asked me where I was from, I said Milwaukee. They said, oh like near Chicago? Dope you're from Chicago, hey she's from Chi town! I said.. haha, no, Milwaukee. Have to rep my city. I was amazed that a culture as rich as their's fell in love with my art, I've never received so much commendation in such a setting... Get ready MKE
evoL,
G Tesfaye
